Overview

Maclocks sent me two screen shields to review, one for my iPad mini 2 and one for my iPhone 6s. Maclocks claims that their screen guards can withstand an impact of up to 132 lb/60 kg. Their 9H material is supposed to deliver superior scratch protection while the high-grade tempered glass preserves clear image resolution and touchscreen sensitivity. Additionally, their nano-coating is meant to repel skin oils.

I had no trouble installing either the smaller shield on my iPhone or the larger one on my iPad mini. They both popped right on. The iPad mini shield fit perfectly and had no bubbles right from the start. It just melted into my iPad right away, making my iPad seem like it didn’t even have a screen protector in place. Being made of glass, the protector does add some weight to the device. Otherwise, it’s practically invisible.

The iPhone shield, however, wasn’t quite so perfect. I had a few bubbles, most which disappeared overnight. But one large bubble lingered for a couple of days, no matter how much I pressed on it. It did eventually go away on its own, on the third day of use. There is also an issue with fit, which may not matter to the user: it doesn’t go all the way to the edges of the iPhone. As we know, the iPhone sports some slightly curved edges, so if a screen protector is truly going to go edge to edge, it must be curved as well. This one isn’t. It’s not necessarily a bad thing, though. If you use a case with a lip that goes over that curved edge, a full edge-to-edge curved glass screen protector isn’t going to work. The case lip will cause it to lift. The Maclocks screen shield, since it doesn’t quite reach the edges, is entirely compatible with raised-lip cases. Since I do use a case that comes up over the edge of the screen, this setup works for me.

Bottom line

After a few days for the air bubbles to work their way out, the Maclocks Glass Screen Shields on both my iPad mini 2 and my iPhone 6s work perfectly. The iPhone version does not go edge to edge, which may be a negative for some people, but it isn’t for me. I had no issues with fingerprints, scratching, 3D Touch, or visual acuity. You can purchase Maclocks Glass Screen Shield on their site for your iPhone 6/6s, iPhone 6 Plus/6s Plus, iPad mini, iPad Air, or iPad Pro for $37.95 to $45.95.
